Special Meetings at Best of Dallas Toastmasters
In addition to our regular meetings, Best of Dallas Toastmasters occasionally holds meetings that follow different formats.
Officer elections are held every summer and winter. Any member can run for office, whether new or veteran. Candidates are asked to give a brief speech outlining their vision for the position during the next six month term.
Contests are held in the early spring and early fall each year. Humorous speech contests are always in the fall, while the International speech contest (speeches on any meaningful topic) are held in the spring. Other contests that may be held at the same times as these are Evaluation contests, Table Topics contests, and Tall Tales contests. With the exception of the International contest, any member can (and all members are encouraged to!) enter any contest. International speech contestants must have finished six speeches from the Competent Communicator manual in order to qualify.
During a Speech-a-Thon, we do away with Table Topics and the business meeting, and focus exclusively on prepared speeches and evaluations. This allows us to complete six speeches in one meeting, rather than the usual three.
When a meeting is expected to have low attendance due to a holiday or other reason, we sometimes have a debate meeting. Instead of prepared speeches, all members and are encouraged to participate in debates on lighthearted topics.
Occasionally we will have a meeting where a member gives a special workshop to help our club improve itself.
Everybody knows what a party is! These are often held offsite, so watch the blog, email list, and meeting announcements for details about parties and other social gatherings.
